Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translation (Windeatt: 1998): Her radiant looks had grown very pale, and her limbs were thin, like someone who stood all day, when she dared, and looked at the place where she was born, and where she had always lived. And all night, alas, she lay weeping. And so this sorrowful creature led her life like this, despairing of any help.
  • Japanese translation (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translation (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

This stanza, which partly follows Fil. 6.1, describes Criseyde’s dishevelled appearance and her sadness at being unable to return to Troy. Besides, in what follows, we are told that Criseyde also misses her time with Troilus. Thus has Chaucer portrayed Criseyde as a victim who has no choice but to remain in Greece.
