Troilus asks Pandarus to stop shouting and using old proverbs. This is ironic because quoting proverbs and examples is one of Pandarus’ core characteristics. Sometimes he is experienced like Philosophy to Boethius and sometimes, such as in this instance, like clerks in old books. With regard to the former, refer to my comment about “commune” (adj., Tr1.843). However, whatever he is like, his clear intention to help his friend is not questioned.
