  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): So get up at once, as if nothing were the matter, and wash your face, and go to the king, before he wonders where you’ve gone. You must deceive him and other people by acting wisely, or he may perhaps send for you before you’re aware. In brief, dear, dear brother, cheer up, and let me get to work on this matter.
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

Pandarus relieves Troilus’ sorrow and promises him a night with Criseyde. This stanza concurs with Fil.4.77. In Fil, Pandaro asks Troiolo to cheer up in case “other people” notice that he is grieving for Criseida. However, in the preceding quotation, Pandarus emphasizes that Troilus should visit Priam so that he will not notice.
