Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): Very often Priam, and his dear mother as well, and his brothers and sisters, asked him why his whole manner was so sorrowful, and what was the cause of all his suffering? But all for nothing. He would not reveal the cause of his trouble, but said he felt a grievous sickness around his heart, and he would be glad to die.
  • Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

Troilus becomes disfigured because of sadness. Because he has surprisingly changed, his family are worried and attempt to comfort him. Although there is a similar scene in Fil.7.21–2, the Italian source does not mention Troilus’ mother. See also my comment of ‘defet’ (ppl. (&n.), Tr5.1219).
