Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): Yet though the Greeks penned the Trojans in and besieged their city all around, the Trojans would not discontinue their ancient practice of honouring their most sacred god; and without doubt they honoured most of all a relic called Palladium, which they put their trust in more than anything.
  • Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

This stanza concurs with Fil.1.17 closely. Palladium is a sacred image of Pallas, which is believed to protect Troy from capture, but it was later removed by Antenor and Aeneas who betrayed Troy.
