  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): My very own one, I don’t know why or how that wicked viper, jealousy, has crept into you like this without cause, alas, and I’d gladly get rid of the harm it does. How sad that the whole or even a sliver of jealousy should have its refuge in so fine a place—may Jove soon root it out of your heart!
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

Criseyde blames Troilus for being jealous, but she later also believes that Troilus’s jealousy is excusable and claims that she is more sorry than angry (3.1044). Not to be jealous is considered to be an important virtue for lovers (2.834–40).
