Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): Seized with rapture at that, Troilus put everything in God’s hands, as one who meant nothing but good, and, suddenly resolved, he took her tightly to him in his arms. And Pandarus, full of goodwill, lay down to sleep, and said: ‘If you’re wise, don’t swoon now, in case more folk get up!’
  • Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

Although it is unclear whether Pandarus slept in the “outer room” or stayed in the same one as the lovers, his speech to Criseyde the next day (3.1557–63) indicates that he probably stayed in the same room. See also my comment of ‘dere’ (adj., Tr3.494).
