Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): But to the main point! For Criseyde and Troilus, being (as I have described) in harmony and in quietness during this sweet time, save only that they could not often meet or have leisure to finish their conversations, things then happened exactly as I shall tell you:
  • Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

Although Chaucer’s account of how Troilus and Criseyde meet secretly is not linked to Fil, Windeatt (1998: 169) noted it is similar to the lovers’ meeting in Boccaccio’s Filocolo (2.165–83) in which “the role of the go-between, the concealment of the lover, the incidence of jealousy, the exchange of vows and rings” is included.
