This stanza expresses Troilus’s feeling after reading Criseyde’s letter (5.1590–1666), which has no counterpart in Fil. In Fil.8.5, we are told that Troiolo begins to consider all Criseida’s words and promises as idle tales and to suspect what is true. However, Troilus is described as most reluctant to believe in such a case, even though he may be troubled.
