Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): Like someone accustomed to guiding his young knights about, this Troilus was leading them up and down throughout that spacious temple, always quizzing the ladies of the city, now here, now there, for he had no devotion to any of them to deprive him of his rest, but praised and found fault with whichever he pleased.
  • Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

This stanza and the subsequent ones closely follow Fil. Regarding the use of the demonstrative pronoun ‘this’ with the name Troilus in line 183, Windeatt (1998: 156) observes that it appears with the name Troilus approximately 42 times, 11 times with Pandarus, and 16 times with Diomede, but it is never used with Criseyde.
