In the scene preceding this stanza (4.1555–96), Criseyde convinces Troilus to abandon his plan of eloping with her. Through her persuasive speech, Criseyde manages to dissuade Troilus from pursuing their forbidden love in such a manner. As Troilus listens to Criseyde’s reasoning, he comes to the realization that she is bound to leave Troy.
