But in the end he could not completely believe that she would not keep to what he had promised him. For he who is very much in love is most reluctant to believe in such a case, even though he may be troubled.
Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012): トロイルスはこの手紙を見たとき、まったくよそよそしいと思い、悲しそうにため息をついた。それは変化の兆しのように思われた。しかし、結局、自分に対して約束したことを彼女は守らないなんて全く信じられなかった。たとえ悲しくとも、すっかり惚れ込んでいる者には、このような場合にはとても信じる気になれないものである。
