Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): Criseyde then turned round, lamenting so much that it was like death itself to see it. ‘Alas,’ said she, ‘what words can you bring? What will my dear heart say to me, whom I fear I’ll never see again? Would he like to have some lamentation or tears before I go? I have enough, if he sends for any!’
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

Although this stanza is closely in line with Fil.4.99, Chaucer changes Criseida’s “che vuol l’ anima mia?” (what doth my soul desire?) to “what words can you bring?”
