  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translation (Windeatt: 1998): It was no small sorrow to see this, but all was hushed, and Pandarus was up in a trice: ‘O niece, keep quiet, or we’re ruined!’ said he. ‘Don’t be afraid!’ But certainly, in the end, one way or another, he threw Troilus into bed, and said: ‘O you wretch! Call this being a man?’ — and he tore off everything down to his shirt.
  • Chinese translation (Fang: 1956): 这情况看去委实可怜,那时到处寂静无声,彭大瑞立即站起来,轻言道,“甥女,不可做一声,免得误了事,不用害怕!”最后好容易把他移上了床,说道,“贱骨头,你的男儿气魄哪里去了?”同时剥开他的内衣;

Comments from the Editor

When the two lovers meet at Pandarus’s house, Troilus faints at Criseyde’s anger. In this reference, Pandarus reminds Criseyde to be quiet and his expression, “we be lost” especially noteworthy. Criseyde has no advance knowledge of this secret meeting, but Pandarus makes her complicit to the conspiracy by obviously “including her in the “we.” Pandarus moves Troilus to Criseyde’s bed and in only his shirt, and here begins Troilus’s happy time.
