Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): But you’ve acted the tyrant almost too long, and it was hard to make any impression on your heart. Now stop it, so that you don’t stay undecided about things any longer, even if you want to keep up the appearance of being aloof, but hurry to make him happy! For believe me, resistance kept up too long very often makes unhappiness turn into resentment …’
  • Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

See my comment of ‘glad’ (adj., Tr2.1237). Following this speech is Pandarus’s arrangement of Troilus passing by Criseyde’s house. Criseyde witnesses the knightly but also humble Troilus and after that, in Pandarus’s words, the iron becomes hot enough to strike (2.1276).
