Line Information

  • Differences among the manuscripts and editions:
  • English translations (Windeatt: 1998): The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth days after those ten days I told of, his heart lay between hope and fear, still somewhat trusting in her old promises. But when he saw she would not keep to her appointed time, he could now see no other remedy than to prepare to die soon.
  • Japanese translations (Sasamoto: 2012):
  • Chinese translations (Fang: 1956):

Comments from the Editor

This stanza closely follows Fil.7.16, but Chaucer alters the description of Troiolo languishing in anticipation to Troilus preparing for his impending death. In relation to Troilus’ character in this context, see also my comment of ‘alone’ (adj., Tr1.358).
