The proem of Book III (1–38) closely follows Fil. 3.74–9, itself derived partly from Boethius, De consolation (2.m.8). In Fil, however, it forms Troiolo’s song to Venus after he wins Criseida’s love. See also my comment of ‘amorous’ (adj., Tr3.17).
